Making a mixed tape in the 1980s was quietly sacred; timing the pause-and-record just right, squeezing a tracklist onto a J-card, holding your breath by the radio and hoping the DJ wouldn't talk over the intro. Every song a message, more confession than craft. You learned patience, and that the Side A closer really does matter.
